Student Loan Education
10 things you need to know before getting a student loan.
1. Apply after January 1st and before June 30th for the next school year.
2. Both undergraduate and graduate students may borrow money.
3. Loans are only available if you are a regular student enrolled in an eligible
program at least part time. You must be a US citizen, have a high school
diploma, GED or pass the ATB test.
4. Students must be enrolled in a program that is longer than one third of a year.
5. Request and use your PIN number to electronically sign your FAFSA application, make corrections
on your FAFSA application online and review your federal loan history. (www.pin.ed.gov)
6. Be aware of scams and services that will search for financial aid money for you for a fee.
7. Subsidized and unsubsidized loans vary in their interest and principal loan amount repayment
schedules. Make sure you understand what is being paid, by who and when it must be repaid.
8. You can apply for both a Subsidized loan and a Unsubsidized loan at the same time.
9. You can choose to pay interest only on your student loan, or let it capitalize until you graduate. You
will pay more if you let it capitalize.
10. Not all schools participate in all federal student aid programs. Ask your school's financial aid
administrator which programs are available.
To Apply Follow These Simple Steps:
Step 1.
Become a University of Utah Federal Credit Union member.
Step 2.
Pick up your Free Federal Student Aid Application (FAFSA) at any of our branches,

you will attend.
Step 3.

Step 4.
When you receive your promissory note in the mail, complete it and return according to the accompanying
instructions. Or, sign your promissory note electronically at uheaa.org. The Loan Guaranty Agency will then send the promissory note to the University of Utah Federal Credit Union.
